According to NPR's Planet Money, over 300 "international experts" are gathered in Haiti right now conducting a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) under the auspices of the United Nations, the World Bank, and the European Commission.
This may seem innocuous by itself, but in the past, such conferences have led to large budgets for international corporations and non-profits, with little money reaching the Haitian population. This was the case in the CCI conference following the 2004 coup of President Aristead. More information on that conference, and how it impoverished Haiti, is here.
The over 300 experts are being lodged in the Hotel Caribe in Port au Prince while 1,500,000 Haitians are homeless, living in tents. More on this here.
The Haitian rainy season comes in about 3 weeks, and the hurricane season comes in 2 1/2 months.
But there is support for an alternative to a foreign-led economy in Haiti. In fact, recommendations have been made by The Institute for Justice & Democracy in Haiti, the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights, Partners in Health, Bureau des Avocats Internationaux, Zanmi Lasante, and the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice.
PLEASE CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN/WOMAN, CALL YOUR SENATORS, AND CALL THE WHITE HOUSE, AND TELL THEM TO SUPPORT AN AUTONOMOUS HAITI!!
